About Salinerito

In the past four decades, the quaint village of Salinas de Guaranda (also known as Salinas de Bolivar, Salinas de Tomabela) 3550 m high at the Ecuadorian Andes has reached a significant development through the establishment of cooperative companies.

In the 1970s, the people of Salinas lived in extreme poverty. There was no main road, potable water, phone lines, and homes were humble houses made of dirt and hay. The only source of income was the salt mines nearby. Due to the motivation of the people of Salinas and the help of international organizations, Salinas developed into a lively center of entrepreneurship.

Nowadays, Salinas is known for its high quality products and the brand "Salinerito". Making use of the raw materials available in the region, the village produces for example:

  • Cheeses of different varieties, widely known around Ecuador
  • Delicious chocolates and turrónes (nougats)
  • Dried fruits for healthy snacks
  • Exotic marmalades
  • Organic dried mushrooms, excellent for pizzas, pastas, risottos, and other dishes
  • Essential oils and natural cosmetics
  • Herbal teas
  • Yarn made of alpaca and lamb wool
  • Intercut handcrafted products, such as unique hand-woven alpaca ponchos, sweaters and accessories.

Salinas de Guaranda follows the principles of economic solidarity, thus the profits are reinvested to the cooperative companies and used for the social support of the developing communities.
